The Power Of Your Subconscious Mind by Dr Joseph Murphy
Dr Joseph Murphy was an Irish research scientist and catholic priest. After a cancer scare which he believed he healed with the power of his subconscious mind, Dr Murphy dedicated his life to studying the principles of mind that could make such a healing possible.
I love this book although a modern reader has to make some allowances for the cultural bias’s of 1930’s America, especially with regard to gender roles both at home and in the workplace. Dr Murphy lived, taught and practiced in the USA.
The book is loaded with easily digestible insights into the power of our subconscious mind. Although Dr Murphy was a catholic priest and often refers to the teachings of Jesus as represented in the New Testament, you don’t have to be religious or catholic to enjoy the information contained here.
I first read ‘The Power Of Your Subconscious Mind’ in the Summer of 1999 so, as I write this, it’s coming up to our 15th anniversary. It’s a book I’ve read and re-read many times over. Understanding the power of the subconscious is, in my opinion, essential learning for everyone. For a video introduction to the subject you might enjoy this clip from the BBC Horizon strand. In it leading neurological researchers give their visual interpretations of the size (and power) of the subconscious mind. Note, in this context I’m using the terms unconscious and subconscious interchangeably.

Knowing how to deliberately imprint ideas into the subconscious is an essential element of personal growth. The opposite is also true. We all have beliefs about ourselves lodged within our mind that are at best faulty and often completely illogical and untrue.
How we pick up these beliefs is explained in the book and Dr Murphy gives exercises to change unwanted subconscious programming for more supportive beliefs. Given that EFT was first developed in 1995 there is of course no mention of it in ‘The Power Of Your Subconscious Mind’, but I think Dr Murphy would’ve been delighted to learn about this powerful tool for positive change.
EFT works with both the conscious and the subconscious to heal the angers, the hurts, the shame and the judgements that underly our mistaken beliefs about ourselves and what we deserve out of life.
In my professional and personal experience, our biggest shifts come when we find peace with the past and release our limiting subconscious programming and beliefs.
When I first started reading this book I was so concerned about what people might think of me for getting into ‘this stuff’ I put a plain black cover on it so no-one on the bus or tube would know what I was reading. Perhaps this gives an indication of how much has changed for me as a consequence of learning about EFT and the subconscious mind.
If you are ready for a greater sense of personal freedom and peace of mind I thoroughly recommend you add ‘The Power Of Your Subconscious Mind’ By Dr Joseph Murphy to your reading list.
